Are Dog Choke Collars Cruel?

Choke CollarChoke collars are also sometimes referred to as pring or prong collars.  They are slip collars made of chain links, usually metal, and when the collar is pulled, the links squeeze the flesh around the dog’s neck.

Personally, I think it looks cruel and I hate to see a dog on a choke collar, however, they have their purpose.  They aren’t designed to be used everyday and there should be no need to use a choke collar on a small dog, unless the dog has a real behaviour problem and NEVER used on a puppy.

They are good for training, particularly with larger, heavier dogs that otherwise could be difficult to control if untrained.

If you think you should be using one, then you really should take your dog to proper training classes or to a proper trainer.  Ensure an experienced trainer shows you how to use one correctly.  They are a corrective tool to be used at the right time only.  The dog shouldn’t be hauled around with one.  Used incorrectly, they can make a dog worse and cause injury.
