Can A Dog Count?

Have you seen anyone do that trick with their dog where they ask the dog a maths question like ‘what is two plus two?’ and then the dog nods or barks four times. Everyone is impressed til they realise the dog is just following a quite cue from his owner.

They do that with horses pawing the ground too. It’s a rubbish trick, and it makes people think that dogs can’t count.

Well, you’re all wrong because dogs can count.

If you don’t believe me, follow these instructions in front of your dog:

Get three dog treats

Put them in your pocket

Give your dog two biscuits

Now tell me dogs can’t count.
