Cloned Sniffer Dogs

In 2005, the first known dog clone was created by Seoul National University students in Korea.  The team leader was Lee Byeong-chun was claimed significant breakthroughs on stem cell research.  These later proved to be false, but the dog cloning was genuine.

Earlier this week, Korean customs unveiled seven cloned labradors who are currently being trained as sniffer dogs to detect explosives or drugs at airports and seaports.  The labradors are five to six months old and were cloned from an experienced drug sniffer dog.  They are all called “Toppy”, which is a combination of ‘tomorrow’ and ‘puppy’.

A trainer called Kim Nak-seung, who was exercising and training the dogs, said:

“They have a superior nature. They are active and excel in accepting the training.”

Earlier this year, all seven dogs passed a behaviour test to check if they were genetically capable of being sniffer dogs.  Only 10 – 15% of naturally-born dogs can pass this test but all seven of the dogs passed.
