Teach Your Child To Play Nicely With Dogs

dog baby childTalking of children in my little rant about aggressive dogs the other day, I feel I should try to help the parents of the awful children who torture my dog and all the other, otherwise happy and friendly, dogs in the world.

Ask
Firstly, teach your child that not all dogs are used to or like to be petted by strangers – tell them to ALWAYS ask the owner before running up and practically jumping on the unsuspecting dog that’s busy sniffing around the park. No-one knows their dog better than the owner and this gives the owner the opportunity to say no or to supervise the greeting.

Introduce Themselves
It’s natural for a child to want to pet a dog on the head straight Read the rest of this entry »

Why Own A Dog?

Somebody sent me this little poem today, and for those of you own one, or two, or maybe more dogs, it will all make perfect sense..

Why own a dog? There’s a danger you know,
You can’t own just one, for the craving will grow.
There’s no doubt they’re addictive, wherein lies the danger.
While living with lots, you’ll grow poorer and stranger.

One dog is no trouble, and two are so funny. Read the rest of this entry »

One Small Change Can Help Your Dog Lose Weight

fat dog lose weightNew Year, new you and all that.  Every year, we pile on the Christmas pounds, then spend the next three months or so trying to shift it.  Yesterday, I finally managed to squeeze back into some rather tight jeans… I couldn’t breathe, but that’s not the point.  It did make me think though, and it reminded me of one little porky dog’s story.

This particular dog, having been relatively skinny until about the age of two, suddenly seemed to pile on the weight, despite having far more walks than she’d had until then.  Consider that the weight increase coincided with a change of ownership and you might take a different slant on it.  It’s true that the dog was getting a lot of dog treats and some naughty human snacks too, but Read the rest of this entry »

Help Your Child Overcome Their Fear Of Dogs

crying child dogI remember walking through the park with my dog Bailey one Sunday. It was very quiet and I’d let her off the leash to have a little run around. We were in the middle of a large green area when I noticed a small boy, probably aged around 7, walking down the path alongside with a lady I presume to be his grandma. As soon as he spotted Bailey, he burst into tears and ran round the back of this lady’s skirt to bury his face in her skirt!

I actually looked round to see what had upset him so much and could only arrive at the conclusion that it was Bailey he was afraid of!

Bearing in mind that Read the rest of this entry »

How To Teach Your Puppy Not To Bite

how to stop your puppy dog bitingA very common question that prospective dog owners ask a breeder is “Will he bite?”  The answer to that question is “If you let him, then yes he will!”

If you think about it, when puppies are in the litter, they learn by mouthing and biting.  They play-bite with each other and when they find something new, then to discover what it’s for, they try biting it.  They bite it to see if they can eat it, bite it and try to move it to see if it’s a plaything or to see if it squeaks.
