How To Not Stop Your Dog From Whining

After my article on whining yesterday, one point was raised about what to do if your dog just won’t stop whining, how do you not give in? So, in response, here’s my two-penneth on the topic.

Every time you give in when your dog whines, you are reinforcing the habit and telling him that if he whines, he’ll get what he wants. I cannot emphasise enough how strong you need to be. To give an example, Read the rest of this entry »

How To Stop Your Dog From Whining

I once had a dog who whined.  I don’t have her any more.  The two events aren’t related but it was very annoying.

It usually means they want something, and it is one of those things that people find the most difficult to stop.  So, here’s how to do it:

Firstly, there are times when it’s ok for them to whine, such as when they want to go to the bathroom, and there are times when it’s not good.  So, when it’s a good time – like the bathroom instance, comply with their request.  BUT, when it’s not ok, you must be strong, very, very strong – do NOT, under any circumstances, give in

When he whines, give him something productive to do instead.  Tell him to ’sit’, or ‘down’, give him a few different commands to do, then praise him calmly.

When he’s silent, praise him. If he realises that it’s good to be quiet, that will encourage him not to whine.

If he whines when he’s put in his cage or bed, make it comfortable, put one or two cosy toys in there, perhaps try giving him a treat in there. Cage him for short periods of time and do it often so he gets used to it and will accept it calmly.

What To Do If You Can’t Have A Dog

virtual dog pets computerThere are many reasons why people shouldn’t or cannot get a dog.  If you’re at work for ten hours a day, it would be unfair on a dog to be left alone in the house all day – and normally a bored dog means a naughty Read the rest of this entry »

Paw Reading – What Does The Future Hold For Your Dog?

dog paw reading pawologyWould you pay good money to have your dog’s paw read?  Yes, I said ‘have your dog’s paw read’.  Yes, this hypnotherapist is offering to read your pet’s paw.  Now, even if this worked, what would a ‘paw reader’ be able to tell my dog that I can’t tell her?

‘I can see a long walk in the near future for you….’  What a load of poppycock!

Now if I were looking for hypnotherapy myself Read the rest of this entry »

Dachshund Dog Adopts A Pig!

piglet dachshund dogWe already know dogs can welcome some strange animals in to the litter – like in our earlier article about the papillon adopting a squirrel, but at least a squirrel will stay quite small.  This, however, is an amazing story about a dachshund, also known as a ’sausage dog’, who adopted a piglet last month in America.

The mother pig wasn’t able to take care Read the rest of this entry »

A Special Friend For Your Dog

dog hotdollThere’s a very good reason why a lot of people don’t choose to stud their dog, and that’s because if he hasn’t been neutered but isn’t ‘getting any’ then he’s going to be very frustrated.  Of course, he could hump your leg all night, but it is a little disconcerting to have a dog hanging off your leg all the time.  It isn’t just male dogs who want to do a bit of humping every now and then either.

With the advent of time Read the rest of this entry »

Is Foreign Kennel Club Paperwork Ok?

AKC papers KC paperworkMy friend bought a dog from a gentleman about two years ago. He’s had several dogs in the past, and when he collected the paperwork, he noticed it didn’t look like the usual Kennel Club paperwork or certificate.

Upon closer inspection, the dog was actually registered with the IKC (the Irish Kennel Club). It’s quite common to get dogs over here that are registered with the AKC too (American Kennel Club). So, does this make a difference Read the rest of this entry »

Freedom Project: Foster A Dog

foster dogs trustThe Dogs Trust is running an appeal, specifically aimed at London and Yorkshire, for people to temporarily foster a dog so that their female owners can flee their abusive partners.  The project, called The Freedom Project, has been running since 2004 and has been so successful that they’ve run out of foster carers.  Over 280 dogs have been fostered so far, dogs like those pictured (thanks to the Dogs Trust for the picture).

There is a proven link between animal and domestic abuse Read the rest of this entry »
