Hero Dog Saves Kittens

A dog in Australia has saved a box of kittens from a fire.  Leo, a Jack Russell cross, did not escape the fire with his family of four and their other dog, but instead chose to stay in the kitchen, standing guard over the box of kittens.

The family in Melbourne escaped the fire and when the fire brigade arrived, they went into the flaming house and found little Leo standing firm guard in the kitchen despite the thick smoke.

When they got Leo outside, he lost consciousness and stopped breathing.  He was given oxygen and a heart massage to revive him.  The kittens also needed treatment.

Ken Brown, a fire service commander, said yesterday: “Leo wouldn’t leave the kittens, and it nearly cost him his life.”

The family had no smoke alarm and their little girl, aged eleven, needed treatment for smoke inhalation.  Other than that, everyone was fine and the police are looking into the cause of the fire.

Seizure Alert Dogs

We are always relying on our best friends the dogs for all sorts of things.  We use guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf and now we even have seizure alert dogs for those suffering from epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a serious illness that can cause recurring seizures, loss of consciousness and muscle spasms.

Dogs, such as the labrador talked about in this CNN article, are able to predict Read the rest of this entry »

Virtual Soccer for your Dog

The other day I was talking about finding Christmas presents for people and how difficult it is in comparison with buying Christmas presents for your dog. At the time, I was thinking how many soft dog toys there are, plastic dog toys, Kong toys, dog jackets, collars and leads, as well as the usual treats and stockings. However, it seems I just wasn’t using my imagination as much as I could do.

In this video, some wise person has found a way to exercise their Jack Russell with a rather imaginative present. Jack Russells can be pretty energetic and can walk for miles, so if you have a dog lover friend with an annoyingly energetic dog, why not try a bit of virtual soccer? It looks fab.

Dogs on Facebook

It was only a matter of time really, but one group of dogs now have their own page on Facebook.

But this is no ordinary group of dogs – these are abandoned dogs looking for a new home.  The Scruffy Angels animal welfare group put the page up and the dogs have Read the rest of this entry »

Humping Dog Toy

I’m sure I am not the only one dreading Christmas shopping, as everybody seems to have everything these days so it is impossible to decide what to get somebody. The only one who is easy to buy for is my dog!

Giving vouchers always seems a bit of a cop out and buying somebody a CD or DVD is ok, but often forgettable and unless it’s something that is special to someone or one that they really really wanted, then it seems that not much thought went into it. After all it’s easy to pop into the store and buy everyone on your gift list a DVD or CD from the top 10.

If you have a dog lover on your list, however, then the options are expanded and whilst searching for pressies, I came across this little beauty, powered by USB for the technology/dog lover!

Cure your dog with holistic methods

More and more pet owners are using holistic pet care, and even vets are taking a look.  Using a combination of both standard and holistic treatments could be best in terms of healthcare and treating your dog.

Years ago, if your dog became ill then the vet would be swift to prescribe antibiotics, lotions and other modern medication.

The dog would be taken home and possibly not see the vet for several weeks or even months, which sometimes meant the illness would reoccur and the treatment cycle would start again.

Holistic methods take into account all different aspects of a dog’s life before prescribing remedies, including nutrition, eating habits, home environment and exercise level before looking for ways to not only treat the illness but to prevent it happening again.

Pet food is also under scrutiny and many dog lovers are ensuring their pets get a more natural diet in their quest to ensure their dog leads a long and happy life.

Why Does My Dog Chew My Plants?

Many people are not aware that when they see their dog chewing on grass in the garden, it is because they have a stomach ache and by chewing the grass, this will make them throw up and make them feel better.  That’s the simple version.  There are different reasons and beliefs, but vets think that Read the rest of this entry »

Apology to Dog Toy Manufacturers

In recent articles, I have talked about how the squeak in dog toys dies incredibly quickly, especially considering I have a shih tzu, not known to be one of the most vicious dog breeds in the world.

However, this weekend I bought her a Halloween dog toy.  It is similar to the dog loofah toy I talked about in a past article (one which failed miserably and left stuffing all over my living room floor very quickly), however, it is much improved and surprisingly the squeak is still alive!

Trying to watch X Factor whilst your dog is still squeaking a dog toy that would normally have died by now, I realised why dog toy squeaks are not made to last so therefore, I apologise unreservedly to toy manufacturers.  Dog toy squeaks should not last longer than a few hours.

(I do not apologise though about the stuffing, which should definitely stay in the toy)

Strange Dog Product

I have talked about dog products before, and have touched upon the subject of the vast array of strange and wonderful dog products and inventions available for purchase and that people do, amazingly – and not people I know, buy.

However, I was searching on Google for something entirely different, when I spotted this short text link from their Shopping results for a dog product that I just had to click on just to see what wonderful invention this was.

The name of this product should be picked up by trading standards I feel.  See if you agree… Read the rest of this entry »

Toublesome Dogs

I can pretty much guarantee that anybody watching this video who has ever had a dog will at some point be pointing at the screen and identifying with their own experiences of their dog.

Personally I had several. Second dog in the video – don’t you just hate it when dogs do that?

And don’t you just hate it when you’ve just bathed your dog or tidied up and the little monsters (ahem, lovable rogues I mean) decide to mess everything up or decide they have an itch that can only be satisfied by a good roll around in the grass or the mud?

Watch and enjoy, it’ll give you a giggle
