Do dogs remember their offspring?

As I have let my dog have three litters now, and four of them have gone to close friends, we often see my dog’s offspring when they come round for a drink or we go to visit them and this question is one that has been asked time and time again.

Do dogs actually remember and recognise their offspring, and vice versa, do the puppies remember their mother?

It certainly seems to be the case as when the pups (I say pups, they’re one or two years old now!) come to visit or we go to visit them, my dog is always very affectionate – after she’s established her authority as the boss again of course.

Tonight I went to see one of the pups without my dog and when I got home, my dog sniffed me and would not leave me alone for a good ten minutes.  That’s perfectly normal whenever I’ve been around any other dog but she always pesters me for much longer when I’ve seen one of her pups, so personally I think she can tell.  What do you think?
