Dog Food: Does A Premium Price Mean Premium Food?
I don’t feed my dog a premium dog food, but often wonder whether I should and is it worth the extra price? Then I think probably not but I’ll consider switching to a premium food when she’s older and I think it may be more important then.
Whenever you go to the vets, they always stock at least one premium brand. You would hope that they have a detailed nutritional knowledge of all the brands they stock and that this, combined with their knowledge of your pets medical history, should enable them to recommend the right food for your dog.
Not all premium dog food is worth the premium price they demand. Indeed, not all premium dog foods contain all the required, proper nutrition that your dog needs on a daily basis.
Next time you go to buy a dog food, look at the list of ingredients on the side of the bag. They follow the same rules as ingredients on human food so they’re in order of volume with the largest volume ingredient at the top. If you find the top ingredients are cereal or grain, then chances are you’re paying too much and your dog isn’t getting all the things he needs.
Dogs are essentially carnivores in the wild so a primarily cereal or grain based diet may not be right. Check the list, compare with other dog foods and consult your vet.
