Dog Survives 80 Foot Fall

On Saturday, police, firefighters and the coastguard all helped to rescue a six year old German Shepherd-Husky cross breed called Kiko, who fell from a Pierfields cliff in Berwick.

Holidaymaker Constance Laidlaw was walking two dogs, when Kiko lost his footing and fell down the cliff, landing on the rocks.  Paramedics were called out too when they feared 58 year old Mrs Laidlaw from Cheltenham had injured herself whilst trying to rescue the dog, however, luckily she had followed a path down to the beach and was quite safe.

It is feared that Kiko has fractured his pelvis, but he was lucky to have survived.

Mrs Laidlaw commented:

“I think he was very lucky indeed. It is obviously going to be several weeks’ recuperation and recovery.”

Mrs Laidlaw had been out walking Kiko and two year old Tia, a German Shepherd at around 7am on Saturday, close to Magdalene Fields Golf Course.  Both dogs were off their leads and Kiko unfortunately lost his fotting and fell.  He clawed the cliffside for the first 60 or so feet before falling the final 15 feet onto the rocks.

When Mrs Laidlaw reached Kiko, the poor dog was unable to move, bruised and bloodied and was whining.  She called the police for help, who alerted other emergency services.  The coastguard, a vet from the town’s Renton Swan Surgery, two fire crews from Berwick and paramedics were soon on the scene.

The vet gave Kiko a painkiller injection, allowing firefighters to lift him onto tarpaulin so he could be moved to the coastguard vehicle.  From there, he was taken to the vets surgery and today will be moved to the specialist clinic in Blyth.  He will be assessed today before possibly operating.

Mrs Laidlaw, originally due to return home yesterday, is staying in Berwick for a few weeks to visit her recuperating dog.  She said:

“I thought all the rescue services were wonderful, I was really very grateful for the support and assistance because they were all very good.”
