Dogs Under Surveillance

This week, the Council for Companion Animal Welfare (CAWC) published a report, which may be implemented by the government and have a huge intrusion on dog owners lives – any pet owner potentially but dog owners always seem to get the brunt of it.

The scheme they propose to develop is for companion animal welfare surveillance – this is meant to improve companion animal welfare.  They say many key organisations are enthusiastic about the idea, even though it will present ’significant challenges’.

They suggest running a pilot scheme with just one or two pet species.  The methods of the scheme are still in the early stages but suggest having one organisation per species to identify the main welfare problems for that species with another organisation to oversee it.

The Kennel Club (KC) has not yet made a comment.

The organisations expected to be involved are the PDSA, the Kennel Club, Dogs Trust and Department of the Environment, the Feline Advisory Bureau, the University of Bristol, the Animal Health Trust, the BSAVA, the England Implementation Group (responsible for developing an animal welfare ‘strategy’ in the UK, the National Equine Welfare Council, RSPCA, Intervet (the animal vaccination company, which appears to be the only commercial organisation involved), Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
