Eye laser surgery for your dog?

I’ve raved before about the new modern medicines and treatments available for man’s best friend, the dog, but I never thought that you could get eye laser surgery for them.

I suppose now I think about it there is no good reason why you shouldn’t be able to have laser eye surgery for any pet, after all, their eyes surely can’t be that different from human eyes.

Apparently though, eye laser surgery in the canine sense is not so much to give 20 20 vision like it is with us humans but to aid the control of glaucoma, which is the buildup of excess fluid in the eye, causing pressure and can result in blindness.

Laser eye surgery destroys the tissue causing the excess fluid and has a higher success rate than other surgery.  In the past, things like this meant the dog would usually lose their eye completely but now with eye laser surgery it can be resolved quite easily.

You need to keep a close watch on your dog’s eyes.  If you see them change colour or appearance at all then it is best to see a vet and be on the safe side, after all, better safe than sorry and your dog insurance should cover the cost of any eye laser surgery required.
