Freedom Project: Foster A Dog

foster dogs trustThe Dogs Trust is running an appeal, specifically aimed at London and Yorkshire, for people to temporarily foster a dog so that their female owners can flee their abusive partners.  The project, called The Freedom Project, has been running since 2004 and has been so successful that they’ve run out of foster carers.  Over 280 dogs have been fostered so far, dogs like those pictured (thanks to the Dogs Trust for the picture).

There is a proven link between animal and domestic abuse, as violent men may often threaten to or hurt a family pet in order to intimidate their partner.

To foster a dog, you must be available during the day and have experience of looking after dogs.  You must also be available for a minimum of six months.  All costs are covered and both carers and women using the programme will be kept anonymous.  More details are on the Dogs Trust website
