Is Your Dog’s Nose Better Than A Computers?

police sniffer dogNow I always thought a dog’s sense of smell was pretty darn good. Thousands of times better than our own, I believe. Of course, it varies from breed to breed, my shih tzu can’t match up the nose of a bassett for example, but still.

According to Bloomberg reports, they have now invented a computer with a better sense of smell than a dog! Well, I suppose it was going to happen sooner or later, computers are used for pretty much everything nowadays – but using a computer to replace the sniffer dog?

The computer will be able to mimick the way that both dogs and humans can tell different smells and odours apart. By training it, the computer will be able to detect bombs, explosives and drugs in the same way that sniffer dogs do now. There are advantages to the computer as it can be used in containers where dogs can’t go. Apparently, there aren’t enough dogs in the world, but I hope the computer never replaces the sniffer dog – I like watching them working in their little jackets at the airport!
