How To Choose Shampoo For Your Dog

When you choose a shampoo for your dog, have you noticed the vast range of different bottles, colours and smells? The marketing companies know that when you choose a shampoo for your dog, you’re showing how much you care and they really go to town with every marketing ploy under the sun.

But how do you know which is best for your dog? You can hardly ask him to sniff out the best one for himself!

Here’s our top tips:

Check your dog’s coat – Is it dull and lifeless as opposed to shiny and full-bodied?
Solution: get a specialist shampoo to build shine and volume. You can also increase the level of protein in the diet, particularly fish such as salmon.

Check your dog’s skin – Does he scratch a lot? Is his skin a little flaky or does he have allergies? If he scratches a lot, it could be for either of these reasons. For the uninitiated, no, scratching does not always mean fleas!
Solution: get a specialist shampoo as normal ones will strip the oil from their coat. He may also need a conditioner to replace the oils removed through washing.

Every dog is different so you can’t pick a single, best shampoo for all of them. If you’ve got more than one dog, you may need more than one shampoo.

Most dogs who show the basis signs of allergies, as described in our earlier article Does Your Dog Have Allergies?, can benefit from the right shampoo. If your dog seems to scratch more after a bath, then following the shampoo with an oatmeal conditioner will often do the trick.

All shampoos are going to smell nice – the only reason I ever bath my dog is because she stinks to high heaven! Try to avoid shampoos that have a heavy fragrance though, because the dog will want to roll it off him and it also leaves his fur oily in a way that isn’t good for him.

Never over wash your dog as it does strip the oil from their fur. Once a week is the absolute maximum, but if you can, try just using gentle products once a month.
