How To Not Stop Your Dog From Whining
After my article on whining yesterday, one point was raised about what to do if your dog just won’t stop whining, how do you not give in? So, in response, here’s my two-penneth on the topic.
Every time you give in when your dog whines, you are reinforcing the habit and telling him that if he whines, he’ll get what he wants. I cannot emphasise enough how strong you need to be. To give an example, I had a dog who, whenever she was let out into the garden, she would sit by the back door and whine to come back in. This was annoying if I wanted her to wait outside whilst I mopped the floor for example. The only time I could let her back in, was when she was quite – otherwise she would think she was being rewarded. The frustrating part for me was trying to find a gap in her whining when I could let her in! Once I think I had to wait about half an hour – now that’s training. Eventually it worked and I won. Remember, you’re the pack leader, not the dog
So, the moral of the story is no matter how long it takes, do not give in – not even after hours. If the dog wants to whine for three hours, let it. Do not give in
