One Small Change Can Help Your Dog Lose Weight
New Year, new you and all that. Every year, we pile on the Christmas pounds, then spend the next three months or so trying to shift it. Yesterday, I finally managed to squeeze back into some rather tight jeans… I couldn’t breathe, but that’s not the point. It did make me think though, and it reminded me of one little porky dog’s story.
This particular dog, having been relatively skinny until about the age of two, suddenly seemed to pile on the weight, despite having far more walks than she’d had until then. Consider that the weight increase coincided with a change of ownership and you might take a different slant on it. It’s true that the dog was getting a lot of dog treats and some naughty human snacks too, but…
After a few months, the new owner and their vet realised the dog’s healthy was suffering and the dog was then put on a special diet. The food was weighed out daily to the recommended weight for the dog’s size and she was allowed a little fresh chicken each day. All treats were low fat and reduced to just one per day. They tried increasing the number of walks, decreasing the number of walks, nothing seemed to work and in the end, they couldn’t think of anything new to try.
Until, a friend and her dog came to stay. The second dog also ate dry dog food with fresh chicken and as the two owners prepared the dog meals in the morning, the friend noted that the chicken was warmed up and mixed in with the biscuits, whereas she simply tore the chicken in strips and placed it on the top of the biscuits.
Now, dogs are very much like humans in this respect. If there’s something good, they’ll eat it, whether they’re hungry or not. So, the owners started to just put the chicken on the top. Just a small change, but what a difference. The dog ate the tasty chicken off the top, nibbled on a few biscuits, then left the rest. Even though the food was weighed out as recommended by the vet, it seemed that the dog didn’t really want or need to eat all that, she’d only been finishing it off to get at the chicken!
So, if your dog is have a few weight issues (much like the rest of us), check every little thing as one small change can have a huge effect. Oh, and that goes for us humans too.
