Puppy Parents Wanted in Cheshire

Golden Labrador Puppy ParentingKatie Cross has a medical condition that confines her to a wheelchair and means her joints dislocate very easily, such as when picking things up from a floor or shelf!  Since September last year, thanks to a Cheshire charity called Canine Partners, Katie has a new best friend called Bryon, a golden labrador dog.

Bryon helps Katie by picking up items, opening cupboards and doors, pressing small buttons like in a lift or switching lights on and off.  He also helps Katie to undress, picks up shopping from supermarket shelves and much more.  Since having Bryon, Katie has gone from dislocating her shoulder, rather painfully as you might imagine, up to seven times a day down to none at all.

However, now Canine Partners, based in Helsby, Cheshire is overrun with applications from other disabled people who want their help and the only reason Canine Partners can’t help them is because of a lack of ‘puppy parents’.

Puppy parents look after the dogs in the first twelve months of their lives and volunteers are urgently wanted.  The charity pays for the dogs food and upkeep, will give advice and training and will even find someone to look after the dog if you go away on holiday.  All they need is volunteers who meet this criteria:

- be at home most of the day to be able to spend time with the dog

- be able to attend weekly puppy classes

- have a dog-friendly, secure garden

- have the stamina to look after an active puppy

- be prepared to follow the advice of Canine Partners

Canine Partners is a registered charity with no funding other than public donations and legacies and desperately need puppy volunteers to keep going and to avoid the Cheshire group folding so if you think you could help or know someone who could, please help to spread the word.  Forward this article to your friends and relatives, or if you have a website, link to the article.  There must be plenty of people who would love to help if they knew about it.
