Re-training a dog

Now, I’m no expert on dogs but I’ve had a lot of dogs in my time so I do feel I know quite a lot about these and about training them.

I always tell people not to let their dog do anything that they don’t want the dog to continue to do for the rest of his or her natural life, and especially not to let them sleep with their owner or in their room as that’s usually what you’d want to change at some point.

My dog has always slept downstairs in her crate but over the last year, for one reason or another, I’ve started letting her sleep in the corner of my room.  I think I first let her because I now have a lodger who stays up til the early hours of the morning and used to disturb her when she slept in the utility room so I let her on the nights when I knew he’d disturb her.  Then I realised how much easier it was for me in the mornings of a weekend because I didn’t have to get up at 6 or 7am to see to her because she’d sleep quite happily for an extra hour or two in my room.

However, I’ve now got a lovely new carpet in my room and want her to sleep downstairs again.  I’ve realised I’m going to have to do this slowly and re-train her because she’s got used to being upstairs and expects it now.  When I’ve made her sleep downstairs, she thinks she’s done something wrong or I’ve forgotten her or something and has barked on a few occasions.  I guess I should practice what I preach as I’ll now have to go through this pain barrier again…
