RSPCA Pleas To Stop Puppy Trafficking
The RSPCA has said it estimates around 1000 puppies are imported each week into Wales and many of these have been exposed to disease and may become ill within just a few weeks of going to their new homes.
The RSPCA’s chief veterinary adviser, Mark Evans, said: “Puppy trafficking is a despicable, profit-driven business. We want the dog-loving public to destroy the puppy trafficker’s market. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, do your homework. Question everything and make absolutely sure the puppy you buy has come from a loving, caring home. Let common sense prevail and if something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t, so walk away. The RSPCA believes that many are likely to have been exposed to disease and may become seriously ill, or even die, within days or weeks of entering their new home.”
Personally, I have actually bought shih tzus that have been imported from Ireland, so I do know this puppy trafficking does happen. Luckily, I’ve had no trouble with them, although they did come with an Irish Kennel Club certificate and paperwork and we got them vaccinated ourselves. I think that is the main difference, otherwise you could find yourself with a puppy that you think is one breed and grows into something completely different, or even worse, having an ill puppy.
Whenever you buy a puppy, no matter where it is from, you should make sure that the puppy seems happy and well, they should be curious about the world and you must take him/her to the vet within a few days for a check up. Be sure you get them vaccinated too. When I bred my shih tzu, my vet advised not to give vaccinations until they’d settled into their new home because of the stress it puts on the puppy, but another good reason is so that the new owners can have peace of mind knowing their new puppy has definitely had all the vaccinations required.
Has anyone else had experience of this?
