Should I Get A Dog Kennel?
Last weekend, I went to my local pet shop to pick up a few necessities for my dog now she’s pregnant and due any day and whilst I was there, I looked at a few dog kennels. I’ve never actually bought or built a dog kennel (I can’t imagine why anyone would want to build their own but apparently some nutters have too much time on their hands!), and I was amazed at the range available.
When looking at dog kennels, here are a few things to think about:
Size – most people choose a dog kennel that is just slightly larger than the dogs bed. Remember the dog will mainly be lying down in the kennel so it doesn’t have to be large enough for him to stand up. If the dog is still a puppy, allow for growing room
Insulation – if your dog will be left in the dog kennel in the autumn or winter months, choose an insulated dog kennel
Location – don’t position the kennel in a sun trap or it will be a nightmare for your dog in the summer. Similarly, don’t leave it unsheltered. It’s usually best to place it in a corner of the garden with its back to the main breeze spot but where the dog can still see what’s going on
Run – how long will your dog be spending in the kennel? If it’s going to be there for hours and left unsupervised, you might want to buy a run as well
Be sure to get the right dog kennel to suit your dog’s size and how it will be used.
