Survival of the fittest

Every now and then, you read an amazing story about dogs that makes you wonder at how well they can survive and adapt.

Today I was reading a story about a cattle dog called Sophie Tucker who fell overboard from a family yacht off the coast of Australia in rough weather.  The family searched but could not find her and feared her lost.

Today the family was reunited with the dog.  She had swam 6 miles to the nearest desert island and then survived four months by living off wild goats for food.  When the wild goats were discovered rangers searched the island and found the dog.

The family heard about this wild grey and black dog that had been living on the island and met the rangers boat as it came in.  Imagine their delight when the grey and black dog in the cage turned out to be their dog!  She must have swam six miles through shark infested water and then learnt to fend for herself on the island.  Every now and then, dogs still surprise me.
