Why Does My Dog Chew My Plants?
Many people are not aware that when they see their dog chewing on grass in the garden, it is because they have a stomach ache and by chewing the grass, this will make them throw up and make them feel better. That’s the simple version. There are different reasons and beliefs, but vets think that grass settles their stomach predominantly because a healthy dog can eat a little grass and not throw up, yet a sickly dog seems almost desperate to get some grass and will throw up afterwards.
Of course, sometimes your dog just wants a mouthful of grass and that won’t cause him to throw up. Perhaps he likes the taste, or perhaps that is enough to satisfy the chemical imbalance, who knows?
This is all well and good, but not very convenient. If I’m out in the garden and I see my dog eating loads of grass (obviously just a little is fine), then by being aware of this, I know to leave the back door open a little longer to give her time to be sick. However, if you didn’t know this, then get ready for some cleaning up.
I was thinking as well that if you have plants in the house, which I don’t so I wouldn’t know, then you might wonder why you come home sometimes to find the dog, normally such a good boy, has chewed the edges of your plant off. If this has been a worry, then you have a few options. You could only buy cacti – he certainly wouldn’t be chewing that in a hurry. You could find somewhere higher up to put them – depending how big your dog is. Or alternatively, you could use artificial plants, which he probably won’t be interested in at all.
